As already mentioned in previous articles, subjects fiscally resident in the UAE are not required to pay income taxes, as such taxes are not provided for by that Country.

When can a European live and reside (including fiscally) in the United Arab Emirates?
Europeans can live and become residents of the United Arab Emirates if:
- are employed by a company in the UAE - in this case, it is the company itself that will apply for and sponsor your residence visa while you are in the UAE.
- are employed in the government sector in the UAE - in this case, it is the government body that will request and sponsor your visa while you are in the UAE.
- they are investors in a business in the UAE - in this case, the investor himself will process and apply for his own visa with the sponsorship of his company's registered name. In other words, they have formed their own company here.
- have bought a property in the UAE: in this case, the property owner's residence visa will be sponsored by the property he owns.
- the dependents of the aforementioned subjects may also reside in the UAE (dependent in the non-technical sense, in fact we are not speaking only of spouses and children, but also for example of parents, or service personnel of close relatives);
- are university sponsored college students in the UAE: in this case, the university will apply for and sponsor your visa on behalf of the educational institution.
- pensioners - in this case special conditions apply.

The visa is often issued when you are already inside the country, i.e. after having already entered the UAE via an entry permit, short or long term tourist or visit visa.

Conditions for obtaining a visa
A residence visa requires applicants aged 18 and over to undergo a medical examination to prove they are medically fit. They must also pass a security check and apply for a UAE ID card from the Federal Identity and Citizenship Authority.

Validity of the residence visa
The validity of the stay with a residence visa varies according to the type and sponsor. It can be for 1, 2 or 3 years. According to recent changes, a residence visa can also be issued for 5 and 10 years under certain conditions.

Advantages of having a UAE resident visa.
Being a legitimate resident of the UAE will entitle you to:

- open a bank account
- access financial structures
- apply for a driving license
- access government health services and health insurance
- register their children in public and private schools
